How we helped a global industrial IoT platform demonstrate the power and flexibility of its technology with fast effective demos.

Hitachi Vantara wanted to highlight its new IoT platform, Lumada, and showcase its features, flexibility, interoperability and ease of implementation.

Hitachi needed quick results with this fast-evolving technology to put in front of peers and partners at a forthcoming developer conference. So they asked Matchbox to design and develop a working software demo of an intelligent fleet management and maintenance solution using sensor-instrumented snow ploughs. The building blocks were:

  • the Lumada IoT platform,
  • Cisco IOx
  • Pentaho business intelligence software.

The system we produced offered:

  • Real-time fleet management and monitoring to ensure efficient road salting, snow removal and use of vehicles.
  • A live representation of snow plough operations through a web map and alerting residents of travel conditions.
  • Machine learning for vehicle maintenance.
  • Analyzing vehicle data to spot and manage irregularities.
  • Increased speed addressing service calls for salting and snow issues.

Our work with Hitachi Vantara demonstrates that we understand what it means to be data-driven and how to leverage strategic cloud services to produce critical apps faster. It also shows how quickly we can grasp the essentials of a problem, the fundamentals of a technology and tool-chain, and deliver effective results on time.
