Developing and applying voice design principles to an exciting kids’ game on Alexa.

If your conversational experience is going to use voice, then it should be:

  • Fast – it should be faster than tapping into a phone keyboard or clicking on a laptop.
  • Natural to use hands-free – the user should find it natural to use the skill while otherwise occupied, to get the benefit without reaching for a device.
  • Intuitive – encouraging the use of natural language, and inviting experimentation while leaving room for the ambiguity and broad range of human voice interaction.
  • Personal and empathetic – using tone and human-like expression, in an appropriate setting, the skill should show it knows enough about the user to be helpful.

Matchbox embraced this methodology to produce PAC-MAN Stories, the very first interactive experience on Amazon on Alexa from BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment.

PAC-MAN Stories is an Alexa skill that takes users on fun adventures, offering choices and exploration through two interactive stories based on the iconic Pac-Man character. This is one of the first Amazon Alexa skills designed specifically for children. We worked with script-writers, voice actors and sound engineers to create a rich interactive experience.
